GENERAL STATEMENT OF POLICY

1.                  All members are safeguarded fully in respect of health, safety and welfare whilst at the club.

2.        Club members and members of the public including contractors are not exposed to any health and safety risks.

3.        No work is to be carried out by club members or contractors that is liable to expose them or members of the public to hazards to health, unless suitable and sufficient risk assessments are made and necessary measures to prevent or control the risk have been introduced.

4.        All contractors are able to demonstrate that they have suitable arrangements for securing proper health and safety, including where necessary a written statement of policy.

Hayle Canoe Club's Objectives are:

1.                  To provide conditions for club members, which prevent any danger to health. This requires that risk assessments be carried out as appropriate to enable hazards and risks to be identified to enable the standards of safety to be adapted and enforced.

2.        To ensure that all equipment is maintained properly and that none will be used knowingly when it presents any risk to the safety of club members an members of the public.

3.        To provide means of access and egress that are safe and without risks to health.

4.        To provide information, instruction, training and supervision, so far as is reasonably practicable, to ensure the health and safety of club members.

5.        To ensure the health, safety and welfare of all club members, are under continuous review.

6.        To ensure safe arrangements are made for the storage, handling and transport of club equipment.

7.        To ensure the Club will have and maintain up to date fire procedures; and ensure that all members are familiar with them.

  

This Safety Code requires the active support of every club member, indeed all members have a legal duty to:

1.                  Take reasonable precautions in safeguarding the health and safety of themselves and others.

2.        Observe all health and safety rules and procedures laid down by the Club and use all health and safety equipment provided.

3.        Alert committee members to any potential hazard that they have noticed and report all accidents, incidents or near misses that have led, or may lead to, illness or damage.

 

HEALTH AND SAFETY GUIDELINES

Hayle Canoe Club provides storage containers for club equipment by means of three containers that are linked with basic ladies and gents changing facilities. The containers are NOT for private storage.

Said site and surrounding area is to be kept clean and free from rubbish.

Changing areas are for this purpose only. Valuables and belongings are NOT to be left in there at any time.

The area immediately outside the containers is to be kept clear of vehicles at all times and parking to be away from pedestrian area.

Canoes/kayaks are to be stored in the designated racks within the containers. Removal and replacement of canoes/kayaks to be overseen by club coaches/group leaders and undertaken by 2 people per boat.

Buoyancy aids will have a whistle fitted at all times.

Buoyancy aids and spray decks are to be hung on the hooks provided without causing hazard or prevention of access.

Helmets should be placed in the containers provided.

Tow lines and throw lines are to be hung in plain sight in the middle container for easy access.

The first aid kit is to be kept in the middle container and will be checked yearly at the stock take.

 

Health and Safety Policy and Guidelines, Risk Assessments, Child Protection Policy, Accident book and Incident Report Forms can be found in the middle container. The club Committee will also have a copy.

 

ORGANISATION AND RESPONSIBILITIES FOR CARRYING OUT POLICY

Procedure for reporting/ recording accidents and incidents

All accidents are to be recorded in the club Accident Book.

An Incident Form is to be completed and forwarded to the BCU.

A copy of the Incident Form is to be forwarded to the club Chairman in case Safety

Policy review is required.

Location of first Aid Boxes

Coaches are to carry First Aid Equipment on every trip/training session.

The Club First Aid Bag is hung in the middle container in the left hand side in plain view.

All coaches are First Aid trained including CPR and EAV

Fire Procedure

In the event of fire immediately vacate the area and assemble on the beach for 'head

count'.

Call Fire Brigade - 999

Do not attempt to fight a fire.

Do not return to vicinity of fire until all clear given.

Advice for Non Members

All new arrivals to the club site should 'check in' with a Committee Member who will give advice on Health and Safety matters and Fire Procedure. They will be directed to the appropriate coach who will be responsible for them on their given course.

 

RULES AND REGULATIONS

Do as the coaches instruct.

Wear buoyancy aids and helmets on all courses.

Don't leave valuables in changing rooms.

Park vehicles away from containers/pedestrian area.

Lift and carry kayaks. 2 people to 2 boats.

Stack kayaks on sides in racks provided.

Hang buoyancy aids and spray decks on hooks.

Place paddles in paddle rack.

Wash all equipment in fresh water before putting away.

Wear appropriate footwear at all times.

Do not run with kayaks.

Do not hit others with kayaks.

All coaching and organised trips to be undertaken within BCU guidelines.

Do not access water until instructed by a coach.

Collect equipment and assemble away from parking area.

Report any faulty equipment to the Gear steward as soon as possible.

In the event of fire go to the assembly point.

DO NOT FIGHT A FIRE.

Always leave membership card in screen of vehicle.

Always try to paddle in a group. Preferably minimum of three.

Risk assessments are made for courses and events.

 

ACCESS AND RESTRICTED AREAS

When accessing the water from the beach stay in the left hand channel along the harbour wall. Do not use the deep water channel opposite the harbour; this is for motorised craft only.

Do not at any time access the NRPB area known as Lelant Pool. A sign is posted on the water giving clear guidelines on this boundary.

Do not launch from slipway outside harbour office.
